Founded in 1952 by the Roman Catholic diocese of Providence as a men’s retreat house, it has broadened its ministry over the years to welcome all who seek renewal of life through deepening their experience of God.

As a result of this, in 1979 it became the Spiritual Life Center. While continuing to serve primarily the needs of the diocese, it has also welcomed people from many other parts of the United States and from other countries as well.

The main house, Hazard's Castle — 1846-1884, was built by Joseph Peace Hazard (1807-1892), of the long established South County Family. It was the main house for his Sea Side Farm.

The 105' tower on the left, c. 1884, was dedicated to the memory of the Hazard family ancestors. The hexagonal tower above was constructed in 1848-49 in memory of his mother.
